What is SSOE?

SSOE is an entire operating system, crafted entirely of Flash 8 (to be ported to Flash 9 AS3 on completion.)

It is based on the concepts of locationless data; ie data which is not tied to a particular geographical location. Instead of just taking your documents with you when you go to work, you can now take your whole operating system.

SSOE is Under Development

Bear in mind that this is a work in progress. SSOE has quite a few bugs (hence the 1.0a) and will not necessarily work on your computer.

When complete, it will not only be far more compatible, but also run far faster, and have more applications. At present, the core of the operating system is written (weighing in at over 13,000 lines of code, it isn't a hefty kernel, yet is probably only 10% complete) but many applictions which will be present in the final version are sadly missing.

Basically, don't be surprised if things go wrong. This isn't how the OS will be in the end.

The beauty of this site is that the files are updated all the time, so you don't need to reinstall the OS - just visit again, and as we build more features onto it, you will have access to them immediately.

Minimum System Requirements

SSOE might not be the biggest OS, but it eats CPU like nothing else around.
For the best experience, ensure your computer meets the following basic requirements:

  • RAM: 256MB or Greater
  • Hard Disk: Unimportant. Have 4KB free for all it matters.
  • CPU: 2.6 GHZ absolute minimum. The faster, the better. Dual core if possible.
  • Graphics Card: Have at least 64MB VRAM. Hardware T&L preferred.
  • Start SSOE

Choose the semi-stable option for a known working version. Choose the unstable option for a more advanced, newer version, albeit with the possibility of major bugs.

    Known Issues

Apart from the unfinished application set, a list of known, unfixed bugs is as follows:

  • SSOE is unable to load any XML files, external images, or applications when running in Safari
It is believed this is an issue which affects all versions of Safari. It is directly related to flash player security settings. I am still trying to work around this issue.
  • SSOE is unable to change the background image
The background images load into the monitor icon in the appearance control panel, but do not load into the desktop background when the 'Set BG' button is pressed. This issue appears to relate to security settings, however can be fixed without requiring user security settings to be changed.
  • SSOE won't load the Random Deviation. I <3 Deviantart. Wahhh.
OK. If it isn't working for you, I can't do anything about it. This problem relates directly to the security settings of your browser. When standalone clients for SSOE become available, download one of those, grant it proper security priveliages when it asks you to, and you should be fine.
  • SSOE wont load/Won't open Application/Won't open image/file...
Again, this is all due to the security settings in your web browser/flash player. If you want this stuff to work, you'll need to adjust them.
  • SSOE is slo--o--ow.
Unfortunately, this is one of the downsides of using Flash with heaviy graphics effects. It is adjustable - all of the necessary settings to make SSOE more accessible are stored under Task -> Utilities -> Graphic Optimiser.
